Aberystwyth Arts Centre – Artist Residency, Week One.
The development of drawing.
Week one of my residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre was spent settling in, drawing, preparing for my open studio events as part of the International Ceramics Festival and carrying out research on the beach near to where I am staying in Llanrhystud.
Drawings initially focussed on transitions from symmetrical to asymmetrical forms, but true to the project title ‘Material Matters’, the dust from charcoal & soft pastels brought something additional and innate to the creative process. Having laid a sheet of paper on the floor to reduce dirt I soon became intrigued by the gathering of dust. The accumulation of material and the marks made express something of the experience of the drawing process and reflect something of the feeling of my time on the beach.
